Why were receipts in Britain sometimes signed over a postage stamp?
Saturday, October 25th, 2008I have seen quite a few old invoices and receipts with a postage stamp, often a penny, attached and signed over. I can remember my parents and grandparents doing this for large items as late as the 1950s and early 60s, but I’m sure that by then, it had no legal significance - if indeed it ever did.
Archaic law, or folklore - does anyone know something about this?
