How does postal machines tell how much stamps you have on evelope?

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

I know that stamps have an invisible ink that glows under ultra violet light, and thats how it tells if you got a real postage stamp on it. The automated machines it slides down reads stamps and address. But how does it tell you have the correct amount in stamps? You know, lets say I put on a 37 cent stamp instead of 39 cents, or lets say I put an old 31 cent stamp and a bunch of 2 cent stamps to equal the 39 cents. Does each demonination have different color invisible ink or something to match the amount?

What causes a white patch of hair in darker hair?

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

My seven year old nephew has developed a postage-stamp sized patch of pure white hair in his otherwise dark brown hair. Does anyone know anything about this condition, whether hereditary, or what it is called, etc.? I have seen it, but only rarely, in a few older adults, and some I have talked to actually say it is a sign of royalty. Can anyone give me more information?

Website to find out values of postage stamps?

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I have several thousand postage stamps that I inherited many are very old 1/2cent 1 cent george washington many different colors…others are unused a few still attached to each other.I have a book that has current values but it takes a really long time to flip pages and figure out what is what.
is there a website where I could select what cent value and color perhaps the face of person on the stamp?

How can you tell if a postage stamp has been used? Does USPS use clear ink?

Monday, January 26th, 2009

From what I’ve gathered, used postage is indicated/voided by the post office using ink, you know… we usually see the squiggle lines a circle w/the outgoing zip/location indicated. They ink this over the stamps to void the postage.

In line with that thought - I’m wondering if they USE CLEAR INK TO VOID STAMPS? I’ve noticed some postage from Washington state does not get marked/inked like most things in the mail.

Does anyone have any further info on this for me? I cant seem to find the answer on the usps.com website. Thank you!
